Let’s continue the discussion about Agile metrics that can help you measure your success as a Scrum Master. In part 1 of this series, we talked about delivering Done Increment every Sprint. If you haven’t watched the video or read the article, head down there now before continuing.

In part 2, we will touch on the accountability of a Scrum Master of establishing Scrum as defined in the Scrum Guide. Most of the metrics here are qualitative but can be easily transformed into quantitative to help you keep track of improvements.

Quality of your Scrum

In short, this set of metrics can be summarized under this title: “Quality of your Scrum implementation”.

It includes two sides of the equation: implementation of all the elements of Scrum and understanding of those elements. One without the other will not give you the desired outcome and would not suffice to get the full benefits of Scrum.

Starting of with implementation of the elements, it can be pretty straightforward. You can use self-assessment checklists to help you gather metrics on this. For example, something that I would recommend is the Unofficial Scrum Checklist that I previously mentioned in my article about useful tools for Scrum Masters. However, you would need to adapt it to the new Scrum Guide 2020.

The second part of the metrics here is all about the quality of the implementation. I translate it to how well the team and the organization understand the key Scrum concepts. Following Scrum rules without understanding them leads to Zombie Scrum. Therefore, assessing the level of understanding can be a great metric to collect and track.

In my online course Success with Agile and Scrum I give many ideas for how to assess agility in your organization. Every element of agility can be reviewed and evaluated. In the course, you can do it through in-depth worksheets added for every lesson.

If you’d like to take the next step as an Agile professional, the online course Success with Agile and Scrum is a great place to start. Learn more about how to become successful in an Agile environment and how to become an awesome Scrum Master.
